There was nervous and eager chattering before the first Tennis match against Temasek Hall, as throngs of spectators filled the seats waiting for the Tennis girls to start the match. Temasek Hall was known as a strong opponent, but our girls were ready and determined to take on the tougher opponents.
The game starts off with Tricia playing singles. The match started off with TH comfortably holding serve, with aggressive returns. Tricia continues to fight valiantly and puts up great rallies after another, but it is quite clear that her opponent is a tough cookie to beat (hearsay is a SG player, also known as one of the best players in NUS in 19/20 batch – Meg from RJC). Nevertheless, Tricia never gives up, and becomes even more determined to catch up. At some point in time, she tried so hard that her return hit way too wide, nearly hitting the other TH opponent in the next court. Despite Tricia’s best efforts, the renown IVP opponent was just rolling high quality shots one after another, eventually ending the game with a final score of 0-9. However, it must be known that the score does not reflect the intensity and effort put in by Tricia at all.
EH 0:1 TH
Playing concurrently would be female captain Leyi, also up for singles. Never one to yield, she did amazingly well refusing to give her opponent any free points. It could be said that both players seemed to be evenly matched, both skills and focus, as the game was tied at 7-7. Leyi then stuns and wows with a crucial break, leading 8-7, but the victory was unfortunately short-lived as her opponent caught up, resulting in the need for a 7 point tie breaker. Mounting on the momentum, TH then placed 3 deep backhands in a row to start the tie break with a 4-2 lead. While Leyi tried her best to attack back, she was unable to catch up with the point difference, resulting in the final score of EH 8-9 TH.
Captain Leyi returns the ball with ferocity.
EH 0:2 TH
Our first doubles team consisted of Chloe and Faith, who were up against two IVP players (big oof). Both of them showed off their splendid chemistry and teamplay by bringing the game to a 4-4 tie, even with the odds stacked against them. However, the experienced pair from TH soon found some weaknesses in their game and forced errors from Faith and Chloe. This resulted in them losing 3 games in a row, bringing the game to 4-7. This gap proved too much to chase, while the girls managed to strike back and win another game, the match ultimately wraps up with EH losing 5-9.
Faith and Chloe puts up an admirable fight against their opponents.
EH 0:3 TH
Next up for doubles consisted of the two-shus team, Shu Ling and Shu Jing. There seems to be some sort of twinning phenomenon at play, with TH presenting two players with jersey numbers 81 as their opponents. The two-Shus started off real strong, both attacking TH aggressively, managing a 3-1 lead. But the 81 clones soon caught up and was leading 4-3. Despite sick returns and incredible gets after another to try and turn the tide, it was just not meant to be. Although the double-Shus tried their best,TH was like a shooting star machine that eventually won 9-4.
EH 0:4 TH
Violet, the final singles player, starts off brilliantly and she dominates the match first, getting the first point. Both players fought equally hard, but TH managed to bring the score up to 3-3. Violet’s game was extremely tricky though, as her opponent hits unorthodox strokes with heavy spins. As the match progresses, it became evident that Violet was growing tired. However, as TH leads 5-4, Violet becomes more determined than ever, and with a never-seen-before fervour, she smashes the ball, so hard that it almost collides into her opponents face (the crowd goes wild!) With bated breaths, the crowd quietens as the match continues, and supporters ROAR as TH fails to serve successfully, making the score 5-5. Violet had a great get to get her opponent up and running when suddenly, a stray ball from another court flies into the court! The crowd yells “FOUL!” and the point is replayed, but TH unfortunately lands the next point. Following that, there were a few sweet saves by Violet, but despite going all out, she falls short eventually and loses the match with a close score of 9-7.
Violet puts her Road Relay stamina to use in a long and grueling match.
Final Score- EH 0:5 TH
Despite the results, it must be said that they do not reflect the hard work and immense training our tennis girls went through. Let us continue supporting them and wish them all the best for their other matches! Head over to EusoffWork’s Facebook page for more photos of the team!
