The Eusoff female tennis team started their IHG journey today against KR, and everyone arrived at the court ready to win. The TM, Robbo, had high hopes for the team, and senior series star Faith also had faith in the lineup today. With cans of new balls opened and the players all warmed up, the matches were primed to start.
The first singles match was played by freshie superstar Manali, who was up against KR’s best player. It was only 2 points into the game when Manali’s opponent accidentally flung her racket into another court. A sign of things to come, perhaps? Double faults from KR as well as minimal mistakes from Manali allowed her to take the first two games with relative ease, with one of them even being a flawless game. KR managed to win the next game, but that was all she wrote, as Manali won the rest of the games in convincing fashion by edging out long rallies and making her opponent hit balls into every court except the correct one. With all her spectacular plays, Manali took several flawless games and made quick work of KR, securing the first singles for Eusoff with a 9-1 victory.
First singles: Manali 9-1 (W)
Anna and Min were the two freshies playing the first doubles match, and KR managed to put up a good fight to win 3 of the first 9 games played, and Eusoff was up 6-3. With food on her mind and her hunger giving her motivation, Anna pulled off two service aces to give them a flawless game, and KR started floundering from there, with miscommunication resulting in dropped balls and several other mistakes costing them crucial points. It was smooth sailing from there as Anna and Min worked together to prevent KR from taking any more games, closing out the set 9-3.
First doubles: Anna and Min 9-3 (W)
Erica, the tennis captain, squared off against her opponent in the second singles match. “Everybody chokes, but it’s how you bounce back from it that matters”, and Erica was determined not to fall prey to another one of her infamous chokes. With that, she was off to a good start, taking the first two games while only dropping two points. In the third game, Erica was tied up at 40-40 for sudden death, but she maintained her composure and denied KR a chance of getting an early game. It was not until the sixth game that KR managed to steal a game away from Erica, but Erica faced little resistance for the rest of the match, taking game after game with her clean serves and varying plays that KR just couldn’t handle.
Second singles: Erica 9-1 (W)
captain Erica focused on making beautiful serves, if only she was this focused in class too... (eh sike)
For the second doubles match, Vivien and Vivian (aka Vivoot) faced off against their KR counterparts. Having vomited almost every day in the past 2 weeks, Vivoot deserves extra respect for giving her best despite having food poisoning. The Viv duo displayed their amazing chemistry throughout the games, and even though Vivoot missed several high balls (which she just laughed off), Vivien did her best to cover Vivoot from behind. With overhead smashes and volleys from Vivoot as well as great rallies from Vivien, they pulled ahead with an early 5-0 lead. Even Vivoot’s arm turning numb only resulted in KR winning one game, but a quick mid-game massage by Vivien fixed that, and they stomped their opponents for the remainder of the set to claim a 9-1 victory.
Second doubles: Vivien and Vivian 9-1 (W)
not sure if this shows our Viv twins' joy over winning a game or expressing their tiredness... shag.........
but nevertheless a good win by them!
The third singles showcased tennis veteran Faith, who really made her opponent run for the ball at every opportunity. She took four straight games before dropping one to KR, and despite KR managing to steal another game away from Faith, she remained unfazed and seemed to be in control the whole time. With service aces, volleys and other skillful plays, Faith quickly found herself with only one more game standing between her and winning. Despite their best efforts, KR stood no chance as four quick points in a row from Faith resulted in her 9-2 victory, and her flawless last game also secured the clean 5-0 sweep for Eusoff.
Third singles: Faith 9-2 (W)
With a convincing win under their belt, the Eusoff female tennis team celebrated their fantastic showing at their first game of IHG. Their next game is in a little under a week, so be sure to catch them next Wednesday to see if their dominant performance continues.
