A week after their victory over Sheares, the Tennis girls were raring to go against their next opponent, Raffles Hall (RH). A sudden shower of rain (a familiar sight to the team at this point) threatened to cause yet another postponement of matches, but thankfully the inclement weather was only short-lived and after a quick drying of the floors, the court was set for this battle between the halls.
Playing in the first singles position was Elsa and boy, did she kick things off for the Eusoff team! Her quick-paced shots and excellent shot placement allowed her to assert herself right from the very start. A series of powerful hits to the corners of the court gave her multiple points in succession as she made short work of the first game. Her dominance was apparent as she quickly strung together point after point with her sharp offence and stable defence. She kept up her strong and consistent play throughout the match and with a solid smash of the ball, she cruised to a 9-0 victory like a piece of cake. What a start for the team!
EH 1:0 RH
Up next was Kelly, who was playing in the second singles position. Kelly continued where Elsa left off and quickly jumped to a 2-1 lead with her authoritative swings. She displayed incredible patience in her game and her tenacious defence combined with her stable and consistent shots allowed her to extend long rallies until her opponent was forced to make an error. She also executed some clever shots as well, hitting the ball to spots that her opponent simply did not anticipate for, earning her a few quick points. However, her strong efforts were not enough as her opponent gained a wide lead and eventually won the match 9-5.
EH 1:1 RH
A walkover by the RH first doubles pair then gave EH the automatic win for the first doubles.
EH 2:1 RH
Captain Felicia and freshie Tammy were the next pair to play as the second doubles for the team. Only needing one more win to secure the victory for Eusoff, the pair were hungry to win and it showed from the very start. Strong serves by Felicia even stronger returns from Tammy allowed them to establish an early 3-0 lead. Their opponent managed to stage a small comeback to narrow the lead down to 3-2, but continued great play from the star duo ensured that the comeback was short-lived. Swift and accurate shots from the two of them earned them crucial points as their opponent struggled to return the tricky hits which sent them running all over the court. They widened their lead to 6-2 and great hustle from the duo in the final game gave them the match 9-4.
EH 3:1 RH
Concluding the final match of the day was veteran Ning playing in the third singles slot. This match proved once again why Ning was to be feared on the court. Right from the start, her serves were merciless as she sent bullets again and again to her opponent, easily winning the first few points and games. Even when she was not serving, her return shots were equally punishing as her opponent could only watch as Ning continued hitting powerful shots all over the court. An initial 1-1 tie was only temporary as Ning sprinted ahead in points, winning game after game in quick succession. Ultimately, the sheer velocity and accuracy of her shots proved too much for her opponent to handle as Ning roared to a 9-1 win, putting a final exclamation mark on Eusoff’s win in this inter-hall battle.
Final score- EH 4:1 RH
It was another solid win for the girls’ team as they secured their position in the semi-final match as tops in their group. This was surely a confidence booster for the team as they prepare for their next match, which surely will be one of their toughest matches yet. Let us continue to support and cheer the team on as they progress to the next stage of their IHG journey!
