The sun was shining mercilessly but our Netball girls did not let that get to them as they started warming up on the court, executing passes and shots with an air of practiced ease. Not long after, the yellow-clad ‘Eusoff support team’ started to arrive, forming a sea of yellow as they set up shop right beside the outdoor netball courts at SRC. After more passes and shots, captain Natalie called a halt and gathered a team for a final pep talk before the first Netball game of the season against Sheares Hall (SH) began.
First Quarter 3-2 to EH
EH started out strongly in the first quarter, with a series of quick passes leading to Alex slotting it home to draw first blood. SH then quickly regrouped and launched a series of counter-attacking plays. Fortunately, ex-captain Li Ann with her godly marking and defending skills and Jamie with her timely interceptions prevented SH from taking the lead. A turnover caused by Li Ann’s interception led to Faith putting another point home for EH. However, SH increased the pressure, and the ball changed possession many times throughout the quarter, with solid interception and defensive plays from both sides.
Second Quarter 11-4 to EH
The second quarter started out slow, with both sides eager to take the lead. EH kept up their defensive pressure, while at the same time increasing the intensity of their attack. Balls intercepted in the opponent’s half were quickly passed along the line and wound up in the hands of our Goal Attack (GA) and Goal Shooter (GS), Alex and Faithful Faith respectively. An insane interception from our very own Student Affairs Director, Li Ann, where she jumps ahead of her opponent and snatches the ball right out of her grasp quickly leads to Alex scoring another point for Eusoff. Great defensive effort from Anabelle leads to Faith scoring two more consecutive points. SH managed to regroup somewhat and scored two more goals, ending the second quarter with a score of 11-4 to EH.
Third Quarter 16-4 to EH
EH kept up the constant attacking pressure on their opponents, with Freshie Angie making a superhuman intercept in the middle of the court, allowing Faith to score. With Li Ann’s air tight defence constantly denying SH from scoring, and seniors Natalie and Ke En constantly supplying Alex and Faith with constant opportunities to shoot, Alex then scores three more epic goals, of which two were long-ranged shots. Such precision! Faith provided the cherry on the top by scoring a final shot right before the time was up, ending the third quarter with a score of 16-4 to EH.
Last Quarter 23-5 to EH
SH started the last quarter with renewed vigour, but Li Ann The Beast still managed to stop them right in their tracks. Some changes were made to the teams’ line-up, with freshie Caitlin coming onto the court. She certainly did not disappoint, and immediately converted a pass from Natalie, scoring another one for Eusoff. With more great intercepts from Anabelle, Sherlyn and Angie, sniper Alex played more of her signature long ranged shots, putting a few more home for Eusoff. Caitlin also kept pace, converting an equal amount of shots. She also scored the last point of the game, making it 23-5 in EH’s favour.
All in all, it was a good victory for EH, with our Netballers clearly demonstrating the results of the endless hard work and trainings that they all have been through in the months leading up to IHG. Let’s continue to show our support for the girls for all their subsequent matches!
