Though this year has presented us with many atrocities such as Covid-19, the death of many monumental figures, state of emergencies in many countries across the world and even oil prices going negative, it has NOT, AND I REPEAT, HAS NOT, PREPARED US FOR HOW DISGUSTINGLY SICK this year’s featured freshie, Rebecca Leong’s skills are.
Some say that she was crafted in the fires of Mount Doom, others rumor that she was the kid in Willy Wonka’s factory that was stretched to absurd lengths. All we know is that Rebecca, or “LeengLeongWEiQI” as her friends call her, is an impressive sight to behold – standing at a solid 170 cm, she will definitely be a great choice for the goal attack and goal shooter positions for Eusoff Netball.
Though she’s been playing netball for 12 years, the notoriously smart Rebecca has not limited herself to just her core sport, branching out just like the tree she is, taking part in handball, various committees and even basketball (which she TOTALLY LEFT BY CHOICE AND DIDN’T LIKE GET CUT FROM OR ANYTHING). When asked why she’s been pursuing netball since the tender age of Primary 3, she informed interviewers “Huh? I hate Netball leh, I just play cause why not I’m so good”. Truly a humble figure we can all look up to.
Since young, she says that she’s always been inspired by one person and one person only – herself. Though many people say that you should always aim to be better than yourself, she takes it a step further, proclaiming that she is, indeed, a real-life wonder woman. To reach such heights, Rebecca stocks her (legal) fridge with fruits and yoghurt, and the occasional yakult soju. With a balanced diet, she quips, anything can be achieved.
Though she may seem to be oozing with regalia, not even wonder woman is without her imperfections. While hard to believe, during an “A” div netball match, LEENGGLEONG suffered a cramp in one leg and airballed a seemingly easy shot against sports school. Despite this, her team maintained their composure and went on to aBsOluTeLY REKT the alma mater of her current teammate , Imma “Rishika” Bush, by 8 points.
On top of her cringe moments, Rebecca also has rather cringe superstitions, such as staring at the goalpost before her game, willing it to be good to her that day. Unlike most players, she doesn’t touch the pole, but simply stares it down with her 69420 IQ.
While we clown her, however, we must not forget that her work ethic is nothing to clown at. She has set her eyes on bringing back the gold medal that Eusoff Netball has held for the longest time. Built to be a champion, we can aptly place our trust in her to do well for the team and herself, and hope she simply does not cramp and airball.
Come support Rebecca “LeengLeongWEiqI” and her fellow netballers during IHG this year! And aspiring netballers, when you train, remember this one final quote that Rebecca left me upon parting ways… “ Shawn Mendes is pretty hot but he really needs to cut his hair.”
