With seven players passing the disc around until one catches the disc in the scoring zone, frisbee is a test of a combination of speed, dexterity, and most importantly, teamwork. The main positions involved are cutters and handlers. Handlers are the ones who control the disc, setting or resetting plays. Cutters use their speed to cut in through the opponents defence and collect the disc from the handlers to advance the play and try to score.

Playing frisbee since he was in J1, Captain Ker Wei said that he wanted to try a team sport and frisbee was perfect as he could play with both his male and female friends. Aside from frisbee, Ker Wei also joined canoeing and hockey whilst he was in junior college. An easy man to please, Ker Wei says that any welfare provided by his TM is a bonus as he appreciates the effort put in to lug the ice box filled with goodies all the way to the field.

A man of many talents, Ker Wei is poised to lead this year’s frisbee team to victory.

A typical frisbee training would consist of warmup, followed by basic drills such as throwing and catching before moving into cutting and a game amongst the team. With a different objective for each session, training sessions will be able to target specific areas such as hucking in order to improve the team’s gameplay and help them become even better! Trainings now would typically focus on training people into playing the different roles that they can best value add to the team. As frisbee is a big team with around 35 people on the team currently, it is usually difficult to get more than 60 percent of the team for training, thus the focus is more on individual skills now. However, the team is making good progress and is getting ready for IHG.

With the recent heavy rains, Ker Wei recalls the time when he had to play in a muddy field after it rained. There was a turnover where one player put the frisbee on the ground, but they could not find the disc after, despite searching for a long time. For the sake of our frisbee team, let’s hope this does not happen to them!

Believing that everybody on the team should have fun, make friends and enjoy the entire journey leading to IHG, Ker Wei thinks that getting gold for IHG should be a by-product of their hard work, and that they need not worry and leave the decision making to him. When asked about EH’s rivals at IHG, Ker Wei sees Temasek hall as the team’s biggest rivals, as it was the only team that they did not beat at IHG last year. Ker Wei cautions that we should not count Sheares out as they have been improving every year, and could be dark horses in the challenge for the IHG title this year. That being said, Ker Wei said that he will not make special arrangements to rest his best players for the TH or SH clash, but to let everyone have a chance to play, and put in the players who are in a good condition to play.

Will it be another showdown with TH for the title again? Ker Wei hopes so.

When asked whether he would like to play TH first or last as they are our biggest rivals, Ker Wei has stated that it would be advantageous to play them first as they tend to start out slow, but feels that playing them last will be a more climactic end to their campaign and more exciting for the supporters to watch. We have every faith that the frisbee team will avenge last year’s loss and claim the IHG title, so let us support them on their quest for the IHG title!!
