It’s been two years since an IHG football match was played and this dry spell has finally come to an end. The moment that we’ve all been waiting for has arrived. Yesterday, our girls made their glorious return to the pitch. For the first match of the season, our girls went up against Sheares Hall. Even though the game consisted of a matchup of two lines, a battle between the iconic yellow and orange jerseys ensued. This combination of amber shades can be likened to a blaze on the field. The interweaving of lines of yellow and orange jerseys were a display of utmost fluidity, grace and ferocity.
Similar to the boys game last week, each 4 player line takes turns to face off against the opponent in two five-minute halves. Unlike a usual 11-aside or 7-aside carnival style football game, this four aside format requires the four women set piece to alternate between different playing positions. In other words, this four aside game demands a substantial amount of versatility and tact.
As much as we would like to say that it was a fair matchup, our team's expertise and chemistry was no match for the opponent. The first line was made up of our captain, Clae, who was accompanied by Humaira, Lily and Nikki. The first goal of the season was scored by none other than by our dearest Lily, who skillfully directed the ball into the post during the free kick.
Lily flies as she intercepts and dominates the opponents ball.... we love an alpha.
Without much alteration to our tempo, the second line assumed their positions. The line consisted of Alicia, Angelina, Avina and Elis. Our ladies put up a fiery bold front, with no bars held and going in for every tackle. After a rather intense scuffle for the ball, Elis takes the shot and lands us another goal.
Alicia's plays were simply irresistible that she attracted the whole Sheares team to defend her
Overall, the match was a feast for the eyes. An immaculate display of skill, assertion and insight. The ability to make opportunities and seize openings was unreal. Now, what is a complete team without its last line of defence? We’d like to give a shout out to our goal keepers, Nikki and Avina for their excellent saves and read of the game.
Even though the possession of the ball was somewhat equal for both, however, our opponents were outclassed by the prowess of our girls. The final score was EH 2-0 SH, which was an otherwise all smiles fitting end to a calm luminescent Thursday evening.
The opening match was an excellent display of sportsmanship and teamwork. There is truly no ‘I’ in the team. As Babe Ruth would put it, “the way a team plays determines its success”. And our girls’ performance was an epitome of that. Spectacular job ladies!
Tune into this Sunday at 6pm to catch our girls back in action as they gear up to go up against Kent Ridge Hall. Hop on over to our Telegram Channel @ihgfootball to receive live updates.
