Our badminton girls started their IHG journey today against PGP Hall! They fielded the following line-up, mixed with experienced seniors and star freshies:

Line up

  1. Singles: Shimin

  2. Doubles: Joanna and Weilynn

  3. Singles: Jia En

  4. Doubles: Aderes and Clara

  5. Singles: Gladys Loo

In badminton, 5 matches are played- alternating between singles and doubles matches, starting with a singles match. The first hall to win 3 matches (best of 5) takes the win for the entire game.

Each match is played to the best of 3 sets, and each set ends when a player reaches 21 points.

If the score is tied at 20-20 then they go into a deuce.

Setting the mood for the rest of the matches, Shimin starts the game off strong, getting in a few good smashes as well as does some strategic netting. However, her opponent puts up a good fight and returns some of Shimin’s shots, bringing the score to 8-7 (to eusoff). Not content with this margin, Shimin becomes more aggressive, lobbing and smashing shuttlecocks that her opponent cannot receive and finishes the first set with points to spare: 21-12 to Shimin. The second set goes just as well, and with some sick backhand shots and rallies, she wins her second set, and game 21-14.

Shi Min started the night on a strong note by taking her match with ease.

EH 1:0 PGPH

Weilynn and Joanna step on court and immediately their chemistry and talent proves to be too much for their opponents to handle. A quick drop shot from Joanna wins them their first point and from then on it is smooth sailing. Weilynn begins her winning streak, maintaining possession of the shuttlecock for seven serves in a row and the pair take the lead at halftime, 11-0 to eusoff. They continue their game but decide to be a little more generous in the second half, and win the first set 21-1. Their opponents put up a stronger fight in the second set, but our girls easily take the second set 21-2, winning the second match of the day.

EH 2:0 PGPH

Jia En sets the standards high with a five point lead at 7-2, by making her opponent run all around the court and tiring her out. Her strategic moves and powerful smashes help her to widen the margin and she takes the first set 21-4 effortlessly. She continues to make her opponent do PT in the second set while she looks cool and composed, and easily wins eusoff our third match of the day!

EH 3:0 PGPH

Not to be outshone, Aderes and Clara are unstoppable on court, taking the lead easily. They make their opponents lives extremely difficult by hitting the shuttlecock all over the court while the two of them flawlessly maintain their formation. Aderes shows off some sick IVP moves that continues to broaden the margin while Clara’s powerful smashes keeps them in the lead. The first and second match are over in SECONDS, and they end the game strong with a score of 21-1 to eusoff in the second set.

Aderes and Clara showed off their teamwork with a convincing win for the team.

EH 4:0 PGP

Brandishing her bright pink badminton racket, Gladys steps on court with an angry look on her face, ready to destroy her opponents. Although she always skips training according to her captain Eik Chieh, her attendance does not stop her from delivering some sick smashes! Blinded by her attention seeking racket, and petrified by the fierce glare that Gladys maintains throughout the game, her opponent is unable to return her shots and Gladys wins the first set. Gladys’ back problems can be seen when she unfortunately hits a shuttlecock into the net, but despite slacking off training, that was one of the only 3 shots that she missed and she wins the second set 21-3. Eusoff hall is so grateful that Gladys turned down a spot on the national team just to represent us in IHG!

EH 5:0 PGP
