The badminton played against KR on the afternoon of 19th January. For the uneducated, this is how the girls badminton format will be played – 5 matches are played- alternating between singles and doubles matches, starting with a singles match. The first hall to win 3 matches (best of 5) takes the win for the entire game. Each match is played to the best of 3 sets of 21.
Line up
Singles: Jia En
Doubles: Aderes and Weilynn
Singles: Celine
Doubles: Sheri and Huilin
Singles: Elis
Match 1
Unlike her teammates who all look very fierce, Jia En steps on court with a big smile on her face and happily takes an early lead in the game. Despite looking so cheerful, she plays the game seriously and maintains a narrow but steady lead throughout the game, pulling away at the last moment to win her first set 21-17. She starts the second set off aggressively, (while maintaining her smile), and with some strong smashes, begun to lead 4-2. Her opponent, not intimidated enough by her creepy smiling, begun to retaliate, transiently overtaking Jia En, bringing the score 10-7 to KR at one point. Thankfully, their lead was short-lived as Jia En closed the gap and eventually took the second set 21-12!
EH 1:0 KR
Match 2
Lovable giraffe Weilynn and IVP player Aderes were up next and the pair show off their chemistry and skills with a series of smashes and well placed shots, almost immediately taking a 4-1 lead. Aderes does not let the giant mosquito bite on her right eye affect her playing and she flawlessly hits back shot after shot. Weilynn puts in her all as well, even falling to the ground at one point, almost in true giraffe-esque fashion. Amazingly, she still managed to hit the shuttlecock over in the play before she fell over, and point by point they widened the gap to take their first set 21-7! They kept up their stamina and strategic moves in the second set, winning it even faster this time at 21-5 to take the second match for Eusoff.
EH 2:0 KR
Weilynn and Aderes combination was too intense for the KR opposition.
Match 3
It’s an IVP gathering as Celine prepared to face-off against an IVP player from Kent Ridge! Determined to prove that she can play against a formidable TeamNUS opponent, Celine darted around the court while her opponent desperately tried to hold on to a small 10-9 lead at midgame. Unfortunately the gap widened and Celine lost the first set 21-15. After a 2 minute pep talk from Elis, who is her captain and an IVP player, and some noisy encouragement from Gladys Loo, who is her roommate and a former national player, Celine started the second set off strong, smashing and “cross court slicing” her way to a lead at the half point at 11-9 to Eusoff! Sadly, her opponent managed to return more of Celine’s subsequent shots and KR won the second set 21-18 despite a valiant fight from Celine!
EH 2:1 KR
Match 4
Sheri and Huilin begun their second match and in that match Huilin proved that she is an eligible candidate for sportswoman of the year – despite representing Eusoff in Touch Rugby just moments ago for the entire day, she still has the energy to deliver some solid smashes that her opponents were unable to return. Sheri is no slacker either as she won a flurry of points in a row with a combination of cross nets and smashes! Their strength and wits helped them maintain a wide lead and the girls take the first set 21-8 and the second set 21-9, securing the win for Eusoff with much grace and composure!
EH 3:1 KR
The doubles combination of Sheri and Huilin gracefully took the fourth match with ease.
Match 5
Everyone rushed back from the Trug Carnival to watch the undefeated captain Elis take her place for the last match of the day- even star player Gladys reluctantly walks back to witness another superstar in action! Immediately there are cries of amazement from the crowd as Elis gracefully smashes and returns shots. Her opponent is determined to not let Elis have an easy win and plays extremely well herself, but even she is unable to wear the formidable Elis out, and she took the first set 21-10 to Eusoff. She finished the second set quickly and with ease, despite her opponent playing well and putting up an extremely strong fight! Elis walks off court with a 21-6 victory and she is definitely not bleeding blue because I’m sweating more than her.
EH 4:1 KR
Elis demolished her opponent without a sweat. She maintains her unbeaten streak once again.
The badminton girls displayed their talent, sportsmanship and determination today- winning yet another game for eusoff! Well done and thank you to everyone that came down to support them!
