Overall score: EH 5-0 RH
The badminton girls arrived fresh and early to Kent Ridge hall for their preliminary match, only to find out that the match was being delayed. However, that did not stop their spirits and enthusiasm as they bagan warming up and stretching, to get ready for their match.
1st Singles - Elis
Ex-captain Elis started the day off well, claiming a strong victory against her opponent. In the first set, during the interval when Elis was leading 11-0, her opponent joked around and asked Elis to please “give chance”. The first set ended off 11-4, and wasting no time, Elis pressed on to take the second set 11-2 as well.
1st Doubles - Gwen, Weilynn
Next up we had Gwen and Weilynn, who’s heights were not the only thing bigger than their opponent- their smashes and teamwork proved to be too good to defeat, and they quickly won their first set 21-11. In their second set, their opponents gave them a run for their money, with some intense rallies but our doubles did not let up their lead, finishing with a solid lead of 21-12.
Weilynn's height may be intimidating, but her smashes (and her immaculate coordination with Gwen) are the real threat.
2nd Singles - Gladys
Gladys Franta was up next, strutting on court with her hot pink racket, only to realise that her opponent had an even pinker racket than her. Despite losing out in style, Gladys refused to let that intimidate her and decided to take the W for badminton instead, winning her first set 21-12. After some threats from Huan Zhang (“you better keep it under 5 points next set”) and Pei Jie (“Gladys no dinner for you tonight ah”), she took her second set 21-5 ezgame.
2nd Doubles - Aderes, Huilin
Our next doubles was Aderes and Huilin, who displayed amazing footwork and quick reflexes as they returned point after point in succession. Although their opponents got in a few good smashes, the doubles reacted quickly and managed to return most of them, and got in their own shots as well- taking the first set 21-9. The next set was rather intense as well, but after many good rallies, they came out victorious at 21-12.
Both Huilin and Aderes keep their eyes on the shuttlecock during one of the intense rallies.
3rd Singles - Celine
Next up we had captain Celine, an inspiration to her team as she took the court confidently despite having sprained her ankle not too long ago. If I hadn’t known that she fell down the stairs a few weeks ago, I would never have been able to tell that she was injured, as she managed to counter her opponents attacks with grace and precision, going on to win the first set 21-10. After a short technical difficulty with the fan, she maintained her composure and took the second set 21-7!
Celine lunges for the shuttlecock, her racquet only a blur, in spite of her injured ankle.
Elis 21-4, 21-2 (W/W)
Gwen Weilynn 21-11, 21-12 (W/W)
Gladys 21-12, 21-3 (W/W)
Huilin Aderes 21-9, 21-12 (W/W)
Celine 21-10, 21-7 (W/W)
Good job to the girls team for yet another victory, we are all so proud of you!
