Squash is an intense and fast-paced game that has players sprinting from end to end of the court in a flash. With incredible agility, footwork and skill with the racquet, players try to out-smart and out-maneuver their opponents where only one player emerges victorious. For IHG, there will only be singles matches and each match is a best of 5 sets with each set going up to 11 points. Players earn a point by hitting the ball off the back wall until you manage to make your opponent fail to return the ball. Sounds easy right? It is actually way harder than it seems!

Enough about the game itself. It is now time for the much anticipated Eusoff Captain’s Writeup! To start, we have our lovely squash captains Colin and Natalie! Time to find out more about our UPZ captains!

Colin and Natalie helm this year’s squash teams.

Colin’s reason for playing squash is a pretty interesting one. Upon entering JC, he wanted to try a new sport and he decided to take up squash as it was quite a unique sport that not every JC offers and he did not have an opportunity to try it in secondary school. On the other hand, Natalie only started playing squash in Eusoff last year! Why? Apparently it was because she wanted a change from playing badminton for so long and wanted to try another racquet sport. Colin laughs with a cheeky smile and interjects, “Not because of one handsome superstar boiboi meh. No need to lie la.” Seems like Natalie has been exposed! Time for some explaining! All in all, we should all be thankful to said ‘superstar’ as now Eusoff has such a dedicated captain!

Colin means business when he steps onto the squash court.

When asked about their squash trainings, both captains said they take their training seriously and hope that the team does so too. Except Natalie then goes on to say, “Trainings are always fun, because I am there!” So sikk meh! Seems like we have a very charismatic and likeable captain! Meanwhile, Colin replies, “Trainings are fun, but we have a lot of wet and sweaty guys on our team. They literally sweat out their shirts and shorts and start dripping all over the court. Once we trained until the court was too wet to continue playing and we couldn’t wipe the sweat away. To quote one of the guys, ‘We won, but at what cost!” That’s pretty nasty and I would think twice before stepping into the squash courts again.

Despite only picking up squash in hall, Natalie has become a player to be feared by opponents.

The two captains also attribute much of their productive training to their TMs. The two are simply in love with their respective TMs. “Bernadette is damn solid with the welfare. She even waits in the gym and (maybe works out?) while waiting for our training to end.” Natalie then proceeds to one-up Colin. “Si Heng actually waits in the hot and humid court throughout our training. Did u see his team lunch for us?” All in good fun and friendly banter, the two seem to be absolutely enamoured of their TMs.

To make things less competitive, I proceeded to ask them both to say something good about the opposite gender team. “The guys team are very bonded and they have fun during training but also know when to take training seriously, all thanks to Colin!” “The girls team is full of cuties and chais *heart-eye emoji* xoxo. Come support them during IHG if y’all wanna look at chiobus!” It may come as a shock to you, but both are dead serious as they told me to quote them on this.

When asked what is their goal for this year’s IHG, both replied without hesitation, “Going for GOLD!” Nothing surprising coming from our determined and passionate captains. To end, both decided to share an ‘inspirational’ quote. Colin, motivating his team, says that “the road to IHG is a slippery slope thanks to all the sweat y’all leave on the court. Thanks a lot guys.” Natalie inspiringly says that “no dream is too big, no goal is too far.” Do come down and support our squash teams for their IHG games in the future!
