Let us get to know two individuals who have been indispensable parts of the Eusoff Volleyball team. Jolene Lim and Mark Shen (both LYLC legends) are the seniors who have contributed to the many wins that the Eusoff volleyball team has bagged. We shall now go on to find out more about these two unique and cool individuals!

Jolene started playing volleyball when she was in Secondary 1. She started playing the sport because her PSLE results were “too trash” for her to make it into (eradicated) Secondary School. She claimed that her dad and the teacher in charge for volleyball of that Secondary School were friends and old time volleyball rivals, so the teacher did her an under-the-table favour and told the school admin she was great at volleyball (even though she was not). The school admin ended up being duped into believing it because she was really tall, and that was how her appeal went through! Jolene said she started playing out of circumstance but, look how far that got her! She eventually found herself developing a strong and undying passion for the sport, which has evidently lasted till date. :)

Jolene loves the sport because it is a good stress reliever for her, especially “when you 1 time good time whack the ball”. She thinks one of the best things she has gotten from volleyball would be the many many good friends (and injuries) she has made along the way!

When asked for an unforgettable memory related to volleyball, she said it would be the match they played against Sheares for IHG 19/20. It was her first and last match (100% win rate) of the season because she left for exchange afterwards, so it was memorable because it is the only memory she had of IHG 19/20. 🙂

To Jolene, teamwork is the most important. Also, “it is not over until the ref blows the whistle and the game ends, so i guess applying it to real life, it’s not over until… you die? IDK.” Jolene is definitely a woman of many wise words. :)

Moving on to Mark Shen, whom some of his fans have described as “the pillar of Eusoff”, “a titan” and “beastly”. Mark started playing volleyball at a young (and impressive) age of just 7.

Mark had to start playing volleyball because his dad was his coach and he had “no choice :(“. He especially loves the sport because it is one of the very few sports that separate the hard workers from the talented.

Some of the greatest benefits that Mark has gained from playing the sport would be the many opportunities he has had to travel the world and play against some of the best players out there. Mark Shen is actually a SEA Games Beach Volleyballer, which honestly says more than enough about how gifted he is in the sport.

When asked for a volleyball-related memory etched in his brain, he replied “when he was hospitalised due to cramps from a game.” One very important lesson that Mark Shen has gleaned from his years of playing the sport would be that “Your game is limited by your vert.”

It was definitely a breath of fresh air learning so much more about two very passionate and experienced volleyball players. As always, do anticipate the amazing performance they will be bringing to the table in their respective final years in Eusoff! *wipes tears*
