Ever thought that floorball was just whacking sticks and chasing a ball? Did you know that the sport is more than just that? Requiring speed, agility and stamina, floorball is a team sport enjoyed by many. Each team consists of 6 players including the goalie and the match is made up of three 20-minute periods. When the whistle blows to signal the start of the game, a player from both teams fight for the ball in a face-off, in hopes of getting a headstart for the team. Throughout the match, rolling substitutes are permitted as players battle it out to score as many goals into the net. In the game, body contact is allowed as players from both teams vie for the possession of the ball.
Apart from a strong physique, players are also required to think on their feet and constantly be on their toes (literally). When pressured by the opposing team, players can either pass to the side or use tactics such as “down the board” (a tactic that is widely used amongst floorballers). There are several fouls which players need to avoid, such as putting their stick between the legs of other players, committing high stick (lifting of the stick above the waist) and using one’s blade to hit another player’s stick.
Widely considered to be a physically demanding sport, players are required to build up endurance and strength during training. A typical training for the Eusoff teams consist of warm up, drills, games and cool down. This season, the male and female teams have agreed that more collaborations are necessary as they set their sights on clinching this season’s championships. Such collaborations have gone underway as they recently came up with a combined floorball shirt.
Now that we have a better understanding of the sport, let us get to know the captains a little better!
Jaypy and Gin helm this year’s fantastic floorball teams.
The male team is led by Jaypy, who has been playing the sport since he was 13. With the burning desire to inspire the lives of 20 other Eusoffians and make a difference to EH Floorball, he rose to the occasion and took on the role as the captain for this season. As the bedrock of the male team, Jaypy possesses a calming presence as he constantly encourages the team to achieve greater heights.
Despite his many commitments, he places his role as the captain of the team as his top priority, boosting the morale of the team and keeping spirits high. His mantra for the team? To set SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-based as they work together towards a common dream.
When asked about his favourite moment on court, he recounted how present-vice-captain, Jonathan, rolled down on the floor after running too fast, upon bagging a goal against KR, which was the highlight of the match. He also shared that after the last IHG, the team celebrated their glorious win with 7 bottles in the Blue Oyster but left the room with 17 demerit points. The euphoria of the win (and pain of demerit points) was truly unforgettable and was certainly a memory that the players that will remember for a long time.
Jaypy showing perhaps a little too much excitement at seeing Jonathan fall?
“If not you, then who? If not now, then when?” is Jaypy’s message to the team as he hopes that each and everyone of them will be constantly reminded of the goal in mind as the team steps up their trainings to defend their title this IHG.
Gin, the female floorball captain, is respected by many as she is always putting the team’s needs before hers. Her first contact with the sport was in Year 1 and she saw floorball as a fun sport, falling in love with the sport. Despite only playing competitively for a short period of time, her hard work, coupled with her deep interest for the sport, earned her a spot in the SUNIG team.
Gin’s hard work clearly pays off on the court and inspires her team to do the same.
Her strong passion for floorball and leadership abilities led her to step up to the role of the female captain. Her aspirations for the team is to have fun while being disciplined and working towards their shared goal. Gin believes that hard work and perseverance pay off as she continues to inspire the team and leaves them with this quote “If you can’t outplay them, outwork them.” Gin certainly embodies the spirit of a true Eusoffian!
When asked about the most hilarious moment, Gin replied “Wei Lynn’s farting shoes and knees.” Despite being serious and disciplined during trainings, the team shares many light-hearted moments and she revealed that the friendships forged and the support from one another are the things that keep the team going.
Both Jaypy and Gin are full of praises for their TMs and hope that their TMs can keep up the good work by providing the team with both tangible (nourishments such as 100 plus and fruits) and intangible (encouragement and motivation) welfare! All that aside, be sure to stay tuned to floorball updates as we spur them on toward and during IHG!
