“BANG BANG”. That’s all you’ll be hearing from the team when you watch our Eusoff hoopers sink shot after shot. Jason and Jin Wen, this year’s captains, definitely have a lot to show on court. But how much exactly do you know about them or the sport?
Basketball is 5-on-5 game played over 4 quarters, lasting 10 minutes each. The aim is simple – put the ball into the basket – but getting there involves an incredible amount of skill and finesse. Shots made from beyond the 3-point line (or “from beyond the arc”) nets 3 points, the most points available per shot. Any other shot that enters the basket nets the team 2 points (other than free throws, which are worth 1 point each – they are given to the opposing team when a team commits a foul).
So you think you know basketball? When asked what technical aspect of basketball is most overlooked by casual players, our captains would like everyone to know that “there’s a 3 second rule in the paint area near the basket to prevent tall ppl from just camping there n bullying small kids”. So for those of you who like to use ‘height’ as an excuse for being scrubs at basketball, just take a look at Jason and Jin Wen 🙂
Our Basketball Beasts Jason and Jin Wen helm this year’s male and female teams.
While most people you think that Jin Wen and Jason came out of the womb with a basketball in their hands, they both have unique stories to tell about how they ended up picking up basketball as a sport.
Jason’s baller story started when his dad bought a basketball when he was Primary 3 and the father-son duo balled hard 2-3 times a week, making lots of friends along the way. He recounts being so excited to play basketball that he jumped into a drain instead of jumping over it while running to the basketball court. Talk about dying for the things you love…
When asked what he thought the key to victory was, Jason firmly believes that teamwork trumps individual skill – that a solid unit of average players will dumpster 5 skilled players that can’t work together on the court. He also believes that this year’s team’s forte is exactly that – teamwork. On offence, on defence, and on the bench. “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
Jason means business when it comes to basketball.
Now let’s talk more about Jin Wen! Some say her school’s decision to not allow her to join badminton in Sec 1 was their single most historical decision, leading to the start of her basketball journey – “and I never looked back”.
Every athlete has their own favourite thing about their sport and Jin Wen’s favourite is when her shots “swishes through the hoop and hits nothing but net”. Well, we all know she gets to enjoy that very often.
Jin Wen is also a firm believer in teamwork. She emphasises defence and communication as key components to success and believes that her team’s resilience under pressure and overwhelming spirit will lead them to yet another championship. Riding off the experience from last year’s IHG, Jin Wen has this to add – “Offence wins games, defence wins championships.”.
Jin Wen isn’t going to let anyone (or four) stop her from bringing her team the title.
Surprisingly, Jin Wen feels that the true carry of the team isn’t one of the five players on the court. Instead, she insists that the team’s manager Wen Bo is the true unsung hero for always giving his 100% through his support and welfare. What a lad.
Now that you know more about Eusoff Basketball, we hope that you continue to support both Jason and Jin Wen and their teams’ journey to yet another IHG championship!
