Spirits ran high across the field on the bright and sunny afternoon of 3rd Jan, with our softballers captained by Benjamin Khoo were ready to wreak havoc amongst their opponents for the day, Kent Ridge Hall. While the game was set to start at 12pm, due to unforeseen circumstances, was delayed for over an hour and a half. After an excruciatingly long wait in the hot sun, (which was interrupted by about 20 seconds of drizzling before returning to a burning hot weather again), our softballers finally stepped onto the pitch at 1:30pm, ready to terrorize their foes.

The game started off strongly in our favor, with our first line scoring the maximum 10 runs and holding off KR to only 2 runs, bringing the score to 10-2. There was a brief moment where there was a very civilized debate between the 2 teams where they were contesting if one of our players had stepped out of the box, but fortunately, it was resolved before I could instigate it with my tr*sh-t*lking. (ngl it would have been pretty wild to have a fight on my livestream) While this was happening, TM Jeyin was working hard to find a way to get a drink resupply to the field.

The second inning was slightly more tense as KR’s excellent fielding had managed to hold off our team to only 5 runs, and KR had managed to hit 4 runs in quick succession to catch up 5-4 with us. While spirits ran high amongst the KR fans, the words of encouragement from our team to the players on the field were much louder – and this paid off as a few excellent balls and impeccable fielding from our line managed to end KR’s batting regime at 4 runs, bringing the score to 15-6.

The third inning was the most patriotic inning, consisting of our national team heroes Taka and Charmaine, who were given an appropriate welcome onto the pitch as Jeyin played the national anthem whenever either of them stepped into the batter’s box. With their powerful batting and textbook fielding, our third line managed to hold KR off with a score of 8-1, bringing the total score to 23-7.

The fourth inning was one of the most exciting innings of the day to watch, where KR’s strong fielding managed to strike out our entire line while only giving away 6 runs, bringing the mid-inning game score to 29-7. With only 2 innings left, our team knew that they could end the game early through the mercy rule if they managed to keep the score difference above 20 (as this would mean there was no way KR could catch up with us). As I constantly complained that I was getting late for my MJ session at my friends place, they decided to let me take my leave early by ending the game in the 4th inning. With our captain Benjamin pitching, he managed to strike out 2 of KR’s finest batsmen, while the nail in the coffin was set by Sheryl, who executed a beautiful catch to end the 4th inning, and game, with a final score of 29-7 to us.

During the post-match interview, Benjamin said that our team had played really well, and this was indeed the start to the season that he was hoping for.

Well done to our softballers and thank you to everyone who came down to support our softballers. Special mention to our TM Jeyin for braving the hot sun and staying in the stands for the whole game, her softball friend from RH who kept helping me out with the rules, KR Softball for being great opponents, and our IHG Organizing Committee for helping organize, referee, and facilitate this match. Catch you guys during the next game which will be held on 4th Jan 9am against KE7.
